Alpacas were first imported into the U.S. in 1984

There are two types of alpacas. Huyacayas have highly crimped fiber which looks like a teddy bear and Suri have long locks, with lustrous fiber.

Alpaca Average Weight: 140 to 200 pounds

Alpaca average gestation: 350 days, almost a year
Baby Alpaca is called a Cria (think creation) and has an average birth weight of 10-20 pounds.
Alpacas have single birth, usually on a nice day, after daylight/before afternoon
Alpacas are shorn once a year

Alpacas come in 22 different colors in 7 color groups.

Alpacas make a humming sound and have 3 stomachs
